Practicalities for the USI community

Note: the pictures here displayed are just an example of the standard USIHOME rooms and therefore may not necessarily correspond exactly to the room assigned.  

 

The USIHOME student dorm is reserved mainly for exchange students and is located in Via Lambertenghi 1, 6900 Lugano - 5 minutes walking distance from USI.
The 3-storey building has 24 double and 12 single rooms for 60 beds; each floor is equipped with 2 kitchens and two laundry rooms. The double room is a room shared by two same-gender students.
Common areas can be shared by a maximum of 10 people.

The kitchens and the laundry rooms are fully equipped for the respective purposes. The laundry room has a washing machine and a dryer.
USIHOME has Wi-Fi access available with Eduroam with your USI student access codes.
There is no parking space, neither for motor vehicles nor for bicycles.

Each room is equipped with:

  • Desk and chair
  • Bed with duvet, mattress cover, pillow
  • Large wardrobe
  • Refrigerator
  • Bathroom with shower

Occupants must bring their own towels, duvet sheets (160x210cm) and pillow cover (50x60cm).

  • Use of the laundry room

    To use the washing machine and the dryer you need a key that will be given upon arrival at the Housing Service front desk (office 202 - USI main building).

    The laundry key can be topped-up (refilled) at the Housing Service front desk. The minimum refill amount is 10 francs, which is enough for about 5 laundry cycles. The laundry key top-up is to be paid in cash only.

  • Room and common area cleaning

    USIHOME occupants are responsible for cleaning the rooms and the common areas.

    At the end of the stay at USIHOME, occupants must return the room and the common areas perfectly clean and operational. Failure to comply will entitle the USIHOME administration to deduct 200 francs from the security deposit, as indicated on the lease agreement.

    The procedure for the return of the room is indicated in the document "departure information". This document is to be filled out and sent by e-mail to the Housing Service (alloggi@usi.ch) at least 3 weeks before leaving. It is important to indicate date and time of departure on the form.
    A USI staff member will inspect the room and common area.

    Upon arrival and departure, the occupant will sign a damage report.

  • Rates and payment options

    Rates for SEMP (formerly Erasmus) students (as of September 2015):

    • Monthly rent, all inclusive, double room CHF 400.00
    • Monthly rent, all inclusive, single room CHF 550.00
    • Weekly rent, all inclusive, double room CHF 150.00
    • Weekly rent, all inclusive, single room CHF 200.00

    Rates for all other students:

    • Monthly rent, all inclusive, double room CHF 450.00
    • Monthly rent, all included, single room CHF 600.00
    • Weekly rent, all inclusive, double room CHF 250.00
    • Weekly rent, all inclusive, single room CHF 300.00

    Weekly rates are applicable only for arrivals after the first week of the month. Example: for an arrival on the 15th of September, the rent is due only for the last two weeks of the month, instead of for the entire month.

    Thereafter, the full monthly rent is due every month, even if departure is before the end of a given month. Example: for a departure on July 15, the rent is due for the entire month of July.  

     

    • Security deposit

    Security deposit CHF 1000.00.
    At the end of the lease, a forfeit of 100 Swiss francs will be deducted from the security deposit to cover administrative costs and final cleaning, as by lease agreement.

    The security deposit must be paid at least 3 weeks before arrival of the occupant, by bank wire.
    The amount must be exactly CHF 1000.00 (one thousand Swiss francs). We cannot accept payments in other currencies, therefore bank wires from abroad must be made in Swiss francs (CHF). All fees or commissions will be charged to the tenant.
    The bank wire must include the indication "deposito USIHOME" + your full name (e.g.: "deposito USIHOME John Smith").

    Failure to meet the payment deadline for the security deposit shall entitle USI to assign the room to another student.

    • Rent

    Rent is to be paid exclusively by postal payment slip (PVR), which are provided by the Housing Service, either at the nearest Swiss postal office or at any bank in Switzerland.

    Rent is due in advance by the 5th day of each month.
    The tenant may pay in advance the entire amount due by lease agreement. Please contact the Housing Service for details.

    Payments are possible by remote payment slip (PVR) if the tenant has a checking account at a Swiss bank and if said bank provides an e-banking service.
    The same goes for Swiss Post (Postfinance) and its e-finance system.

    The PVR postal payment slips will be given individually at the Housing Service front desk (Main Building, office 202), subject to appointment.

    Failure to meet the payment deadlines will imply the administrative fees listed below:

    • First reminder CHF 20.00
    • Second and further reminders CHF 50.00 each

    USI Accommodation Service will send the final confirmation by e-mail and the room reservation will be guaranteed only after the payment of the security deposit on the USI postal checking account.

  • Documents

    The lease agreements have a minimum length of 5 months and a maximum length of 1 year.
    All lease agreements expire at the end of January and/or at the end of June.
