How to assess your level
Italian language courses are offered in different levels corresponding to those described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

For the initial levels - Absolute Beginners and Beginners (CEFR A1-A2) - you can better assess your level of Italian by taking the following test:
Withdrawal
For the course planning, accurate data on the number of participants is very important. Withdrawals must be notified to [email protected] as soon as possible since other students may be waiting for a place to become free.
If you don’t attend the first class meeting you will automatically be dropped from the course and prevented from attending Italian language courses in the following semester, unless there are free places at disposal.

Intensive Absolute Beginners - Level A1 part 1 - Lugano Campus SP
Introducing myself! Basic expressions
The free of charge Intensive absolute beginner Course is intended for students with no previous knowledge of the Italian language. The course encourages to get fully involved in the language for two weeks. The morning class focus on grammar and writing whereas the afternoon class focus on improving listening and speaking skills, expanding vocabulary and developing confidence. By the end of the course students will be able to employ simple sentences and expressions when dealing with various situations in daily life.

- Schedule: 60 hours during two weeks, 6 hours a day from 08:30 until 14:30, from Monday until Friday

- basic oral communication in everyday university life (first three units of the book);
- get to learn the social and cultural environment of the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland;
- the communication language will be English in the first part of the course and it will be changed gradually to Italian afterwards.
Course content
First three units of the book: numeri, articoli determinativi e indeterminativi singolari e plurali, plurale dei nomi, pronomi personali e riflessivi, ausiliari, verbi regolari e irregolari al presente, verbi riflessivi, concordanza degli aggettivi, aggettivi e pronomi possessivi, interrogativi, preposizioni.
Culture
Culture is a major and inseparable component of knowing a language, therefore a guided city tour, a guided visit of a museum and an Italian film viewing in the USI Auditorio are organised.
Final test
Different assessment procedures are conducted during the course, including an end of term test. This is a two hours test, and includes a short listening and reading comprehension, grammar exercises, one brief essay and a speaking part. The final test takes place the last Thursday of the course.

A regular and active attendance is compulsory once admitted. Students who meet the 75% attendance requirement and pass the final exam will receive a certificate of attendance.
ECTS
SEMP (ex Erasmus), Swiss Mobility and International Exchange students will be awarded 3 ECTS Credit Points after successful completion of the course.
Faculty of Biomedical Sciences students of the Master in Cognitive psychology in health communication will receive 3 ECTS Credit Points for the successful completion of the course.
Semestral course
Students and professionals willing to continue studying Italian free of charge after the Intensive Preparative course can apply for the Beginners 1 extensive course (CEFR A1-A2 level) held throughout the semester.

Interacting in the most common situations of everyday life
Candidates must possess the necessary ability to fulfil the essential communicative requirements of normal everyday situations. The course is intended for those students who have a basic knowledge of the Italian language and attended an absolute beginner A1 level course already.

The free of charge Intensive A1-A2 level course encourage to get fully involved in the language for two weeks. Self-assessment grid for language skills
The self-assessment grid illustrates the levels of proficiency described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It is useful to measure personal knowledge in connection with language acquisition.
Entrance test
All higher level courses require knowledge of material covered in other courses. A definitive decision about admission can consequently be taken only after the entrance test organised the first day. The lecturer will address participants who chose the wrong level to the correct one after the first lesson. To deal with everyday language and describe events using the present and the future. Unit 4 to 6 are studied.
Course content
Differenza tra sapere e conoscere, differenza tra andare e venire, introduzione al condizionale, gli avverbi di frequenza, gli avverbi di modo, i verbi fraseologici, le preposizioni semplici e articolate, l’imperativo regolare e irregolare, l’introduzione al passato prossimo, l’espressione aver bisogno di, i verbi riflessivi (ripasso), l’avverbio di luogo ci, il verbo piacere, i partitivi, gli indefiniti nessuno, poco, alcuni, un po’, molto, troppo, gli aggettivi e i pronomi dimostrativi questo e quello, i nomi irregolari, gli interrogativi (ripasso).

Intensive Elementary - Level A2 part 1 - Lugano Campus SP
Esprimersi in modo fluido con un linguaggio semplice
Il corso intensivo gratuito permette di immergersi nella lingua e cultura italiana per due settimane. La metodologia di insegnamento segue una impostazione tradizionale per quel che riguarda le basi grammaticali e sintattiche dalle 08:30 alle 12:00. Il pomeriggio la lezione è invece impostata secondo l’approccio comunicativo.

Livello A2 secondo la definizione del Quadro Comune Europeo di Riferimento per le Lingue (QCER). Il corso è destinato a coloro che hanno una conoscenza elementare della lingua italiana (A1 parte 2) e che quindi possono comprendere situazioni di comunicazione, seppur poco complesse. Il corso è tenuto interamente in lingua italiana.
Test d’ingresso
L’ammissione definitiva al corso è subordinata al superamento del test organizzato il primo giorno. Il test di verifica ha lo scopo di accertare il possesso del livello richiesto ed è obbligatorio. Qualora il livello di conoscenza della lingua italiana non fosse sufficiente, il docente consiglierà un corso alternativo.
- Prerequisiti grammatica: articoli determinativi e indeterminativi, plurale dei nomi, nomi irregolari, verbi regolari e irregolari al presente, verbi riflessivi, imperativo regolare e irregolare, concordanza degli aggettivi, aggettivi e pronomi possessivi, aggettivi e pronomi dimostrativi, interrogativi, uso del verbo piacere, partitivi, uso delle preposizioni semplici e articolate, locuzioni preposizionali, particella ci, passato prossimo regolare, avverbi di frequenza, aggettivi indefiniti “tutto” e “ogni”.
- Prerequisiti lessico: numeri, giorni della settimana, mesi, stagioni, ore, mestieri, lessico della casa e del ristorante.
Obiettivi del corso
Comprendere frasi ed espressioni usate frequentemente relative ad ambiti di immediata rilevanza (es. informazioni personali e familiari di base, fare la spesa, ordinare al ristorante, lo studio, la geografia locale). Saper descrivere in termini semplici aspetti della propria vita, dell’ambiente circostante; saper esprimere bisogni immediati. Verranno studiate le ultime tre unità del libro di testo. A chiusura del corso i partecipanti svolgeranno una prova di valutazione.
Contenuti del corso
Ultime tre unità del libro: verranno approfonditi diversi argomenti grammaticali tra cui l’uso di stare + gerundio, stare per + infinito, i pronomi relativi che e cui, il si impersonale, il passato prossimo irregolare, i pronomi diretti e i pronomi indiretti, l’accordo del participio passato con i pronomi atoni diretti, introduzione all’imperfetto.
Cultura
Oltre all’aspetto linguistico, anche l’aspetto culturale trova spazio nei corsi di italiano con la visita guidata di un museo e la visione di un film italiano nell’Auditorio del Campus di Lugano.
Prova finale
Alla fine del corso, di regola il penultimo giorno, viene organizzato un test finale della durata di due ore che si compone di un esercizio d’ascolto, una produzione scritta, un esercizio di comprensione scritta, degli esercizi di grammatica e una prova orale. Il superamento della prova comporta l’acquisizione del livello di lingua frequentato ed il passaggio automatico al modulo semestrale seguente, il corso Intermedio 1, livello B1.
Materiale didattico
L’Università della Svizzera italiana vuole ridurre la propria impronta ecologica, il materiale di studio è pertanto disponibile in formato PDF in “iCorsi”, una piattaforma online di supporto all’attività didattica.
Ogni partecipante dovrà portare un computer portatile per le esercitazioni.

Attestato di frequenza
Il corso è a frequenza obbligatoria e attiva. Verrà rilasciato un attestato di partecipazione a condizione che si frequenti almeno il 75% delle lezioni previste e si superi la prova finale.
ECTS
Gli studenti di scambio SEMP (ex Erasmus), Swiss Mobility e International Exchange avranno diritto a 3 crediti ECTS a condizione che completino con successo il corso.
Gli studenti del Master in Cognitive psychology in health communication della Facoltà di scienze biomediche avranno diritto a 3 crediti ECTS per aver completato con successo il corso.
Corso semestrale
Gli studenti e i collaboratori desiderosi di continuare a studiare gratuitamente la lingua italiana dopo lo svolgimento del corso intensivo possono iscriversi al corso semestrale elementare-intermedio A2 parte 2.
