The main official Italian language certifications recognized internationally are:
- CILS (Certificazione di Italiano come Lingua Straniera): issued by the University for Foreigners of Siena. It is one of the most widely recognized Italian language certifications and follows the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) levels, from A1 to C2.

- CELI (Certificato di Conoscenza della Lingua Italiana): issued by the University for Foreigners of Perugia. It also covers all levels from A1 to C2 and is internationally recognized.
- PLIDA (Progetto Lingua Italiana Dante Alighieri): issued by the Società Dante Alighieri.
- FIDE: The FIDE exam (“French, Italian, German in Switzerland”) is promoted by the State Secretariat for Migration and is a Swiss-wide system designed to assess and certify the language skills of foreign residents in Switzerland’s national languages. These certification exams can be taken at various accredited examination centers, including several in the canton of Ticino.
